Leaderless Resistance

“If every person has the right to defend–even by force–his person, his liberty, and his property, then it follows that a group of men have the right to organize and support a common force to protect these rights constantly.” —The Law. Frederick Bastiat Paris, 1850.

Leaderless Resistance is the idea of individuals taking their own separate action towards a common effort. When I created the Sons of Liberty Academy it was created with the sole purpose of educating individuals with information that is usually only reserved for the ‘Generals’ of a movement. The idea is that if all of the soldiers were educated and trained at the highest level, it would be impossible for the leaders to be taken out, since more would simply take their place. This complete picture gives real strength to the movement.

The idea is that if all of the soldiers were educated and trained at the highest level, it would be impossible for the leaders to be taken out, since more would simply take their place. This complete picture gives real strength to the movement.

I first became aware of Leaderless Resistance in a very unusual place, the military. Most military are known for their top down, hierarchical, centralized power structure. This system has proven to be the best way to manage huge amounts of energy and personnel towards a common enemy. This structure has a weakness, in that it is slow to react to knew threats. Centralized power also becomes very predictable, since it must train its people in advance to do everything according to plan. This also stifles innovation or initiative, which leads to decay and collapse.

The Marine Corps it is very different than most other military. First every Marine is a rifleman. This means that is the most important and common role of a military, every Marine must be a trained fighter. This is not true with every other military, where everyone is a “specialist.” Once you get beyond most front line infantry in other armies, there are no skilled fighters left. With the Marine Corps, you could get all of the way into the kitchen and the cooks will be laying down an effective base of fire.

The next thing that the Marines do is that they operate from Sergeants and Corporals and not Generals and Captains. When conducting operations, every Marine is trained to be a leader and take initiative. Improvise, Adapt and Overcome is the guiding force behind every situation a Marine encounters. They do not have to wait to hear from higher ups to do what they do best. If they do something wrong, they are expected to defend their position and are often commended for leadership. This quick acting, take charge attitude is what makes the Marines unstoppable on the battle field.

“Like the fog which forms when conditions are right and disappears when they are not, so must the resistance to tyranny be.” -Louis Beam

When I started to look into formalized approach of Leaderless Resistance I ran across Col. Ulius Louis Amoss. He proposed in 1962 that Leaderless Resistance would be the best way to prevent a Communist/Collectivist invasion. While the Soviet threat has disappeared, the collectivist power in our banking, media, military, corporations and our government is a very real threat to our liberty. Now the freedom movement is working in many different areas to expose the tyrannical nature of our system. The 10 Planks of the Communist Manifesto is alive and well in America.

The success of the American Revolution is a testament to Leaderless Resistance. The small bands of militia refused to fight the British power head on. They fought them in a guerrilla fashion and only on terms when they knew that they could win. They did not challenge their naval power, they did not go toe to toe with their red coats. They thought and fought in a truly revolutionary fashion. They disregarded conducts of “proper” war and used ambushes, attacked the commanders of the armies and midnight raids.

Many patriots used the Leaderless Resistance to form the intellectual basis of the Revolution years before the first shot was fired. They fought an intellectual war for the heart and minds of Americans and undermined the support for the costly war inside the empire. The original Sons of Liberty fought an intellectual battle for years as they challenge the British Empire and even challenged their fellow Americans to think. This decentralized approach lead to things like the Boston Tea Party. The original Sons of Liberty took it upon themselves to use non violent, non compliance to send a message to the Empire and wake their fellow citizens. Many of the founding fathers participated in the Committee of Correspondence to create the intellectual foundation necessary to lead a successful war and establishment of the first truly free society.

The Sons of Liberty Academy seeks to give a full education so that individuals can have a complete picture to go about creating acts of Leaderless Resistance. It is useless, or worse counter productive, spending time and energy fighting the branches of power and not the root of power. The other really interesting aspect of this, is that each act of resistance is according to that individuals special talent. Some may make songs, some may debate, some may make some public protest, and others spread ideas. The point is that each individual effort is decentralized, powerful, and unpredictable.
